Investigation courts in India awarded 102 death sentences in 2019. This number is 60% less than the 162 death sentences passed in 2018.
However, the death penalty ratio for murders involved in sexual offenses was at a four-year high of 52.94% (54 out of 102 conviction cases) in 2019.
192019 also saw the highest number confirmed by the High Courts in four years; 17 of the 26 confirmed (65.38%) were in homicide offenses involving sexual violence.
The Supreme Court (mainly during the tenure of former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi) listed and heard 27 death penalty cases in a year since 2001.
One of the two death sentences was for sexual violence-murder; Three of the four children were victims of murder in the death penalty for sexual violence-murder.
